We’ve really been thinking about tangible actions we can take for the fight against racism and injustice globally. The #blacklivesmatter moment is an incredibly powerful ground-surge that started in America but has shone a belated but much needed light on how insidious the same issues are in our own back yard. Although there are too many causes to count that we would like to actively support, with some research we have decided to start with the crucial work of the
North Australian Aboriginal Justice Agency (NAAJA).
The organisation provides legal representation and justice for Aboriginal Territorians.
Some sobering statistics:
- Aboriginal people make up 30% of the Northern Territory’s population yet 85% of its jail population and 98% of its juvenile detention population.
- There Have been 432 aboriginal deaths in custody since the royal commission in 1991.
- There has never been a conviction for a death in custody.
NAAJA is contracted by the Commonwealth Attorney General’s Department (AGD) to provide Criminal and Civil Law services to Aboriginal people and their families in the Northern Territory.
The organisation now employ 160 full time staff. with 43% of their staff aboriginal Australians.
We have decided to donate 10% of our sales from Avant by Avant studio for the Month of June to support this important cause for justice.
We will continue to research and educate ourselves to find causes that are in particular need of awareness and support.
