Remy: Photography, Travel And Slow Fashion

Remy Bernhardt is known for her classic style that brings about a sense of timelessness to her work. Her authentic style has seen her move seamlessly from fashion styling and production into art direction and photography. Remy bases herself in Byron Bay, and travels to exclusive locations around the world, helping both Australian and international clients photograph and bring narrative to their fashion campaigns and editorials. Her next creative journey is launching a her own slow fashion brand CRÈME.

You’ve transitioned seamlessly from fashion styling and production to art direction and photography. How have these disciplines influenced and enriched one another in your work?

I feel like styling, production, art direction and photography are all the necessary ingredients needed to create a shoot. Even though it could come across as being a 'jack of all trades', I think it's so important to understand and learn all these disciplines - The crucial elements and details to producing a photoshoot, the endless prep involved  and eye for detail needed with styling, being able to share your vision through art direction, to the technicalities and capturing a single moment in photography - I love every element and think learning each one has hugely benefited my work.

Travel seems to be a significant part of your work. How do the diverse locations you visit shape the narratives of the campaigns and editorials you direct?

Travel is the cornerstone of my creativity. Every location tells its own story, and prompts me to translate that into a narrative for my campaigns and editorials. I love exploring a new destination, it makes me feel so inspired.

What are some of the most memorable projects or locations you’ve worked on, and what made them stand out?

Sicily stands out as my favourite destination and project location. The architecture, beaches and people of Sicily embodies everything I love. Producing shoots there gave me the confidence to establish myself as a fashion photographer, and the campaigns I created in Sicily remain some of my proudest work.

In an industry that’s always chasing the next trend, how do you stay grounded in your timeless approach while remaining innovative?

While I appreciate fashion trends, my inspiration comes from archival references and the enduring appeal of timeless designs. I aim for a classic, timeless aesthetic that remains relevant regardless of fleeting fads. It’s about creating work that feels authentic and everlasting.

What inspired you to start CRÈME?

Starting Crème has been a dream of mine for years. While I love collaborating with clients, I’ve always wanted to create something that reflects my personal vision and values. Studying sustainable design during Covid also motivated me to challenge the fashion industry's harmful practices. Crème was born to embody timeless style while promoting a more sustainable approach to fashion.

What does “slow fashion” mean to you?

Slow fashion is about mindful consumption—choosing quality over quantity, recycling, and considering every aspect of a garment's life cycle, from its creation to its eventual disposal. I am admittedly addicted to fashion and shopping, and a prime suspect to why this industry is so harmful. It’s something I’m continually working on, and Crème represents my commitment  to fostering a more intentional and responsible approach to fashion

What challenges have you faced launching a fashion brand?

To be honest the biggest challenge has been both money and finding the time to work on my own work. Producing high-quality garments while being mindful of every detail—trims, buttons, zippers, and ethical production—is costly. I’ve avoided shortcuts to ensure everything aligns with my values, which has made the process slow and expensive but ultimately rewarding.

What type of person do you envision wearing CRÈME?

Crème is for someone who appreciates the art of tailoring, loves versatile wardrobe staples, and values small, thoughtful details. It’s designed for those who approach fashion creatively and value timeless, well-made pieces.

What’s next on your creative journey?

Right now, my focus is on actually launching Crème! Beyond that, I’m looking forward to traveling to Europe and other incredible destinations next year to bring more campaigns to life for my clients.
